STEP 5
- Insert the new rubber collet into the heater tube followed by the metal sleeve.
- Be sure the metal sleeve fits around the inner heater tube as shown.
This should be a nice tight fit that will not work loose when re-installing.
- This is what it will look like, only clean, modern and non-toxic.

STEP 6
- Re-install using the new clamps. (You do not need to remove the heater boxes, just lots of elbow-grease)
*Be sure you retain your fiberglass cloth insulation sleeves that go above the heater tubes. They are non-toxic and keep the metal piping insulated pretty well. If you don't have them, contact bustedbus.com and get a pair. They will arrive all cleaned up for you. In fact, if you don't have any of the original parts needed, bustedbus.com will hook you up.
STEP 7
- Discard your ratty clothing you wore during the cleanup.
- Washing clothes doesn't clean up the asbestos. In fact, when you throw them in the dryer, the asbestos becomes airborn and zips right out into the dryer vent.
- As a side note, all of my instructions are opinions. My abatement method is based off of a good friend that works in asbestos abatement management in Libby Montana, one of the largest contaminated towns in the world. This heater tube project is considered "light" abatement. Asbestos is only toxic if disturbed. If you don't want the risk, don't touch anything, ever.
- Oh, and if you are a lawyer from VW, none of this site/content is affiliated with VWOA. (any other lawyers are cool since I owe you guys big-time)
